UC Santa Barbara is quickly becoming a leader in the arena of stem cell biology therefore, it was important for them to upgrade and modernize several of their facilities to advance their research and attract top talent including Dr. Denise Montell and Dr. Craig Montell from Johns Hopkins University.

To ensure the continued success of these talented scientists, UCSB hired architecture firm Blackbird Architects and GEI to provide a complete lab renovation. Blackbird Architects is performing the architectural design while GEI served as the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineers on the project. The new showcase 7,000 square foot biology lab is scheduled to be complete in early of 2014 and will be devoted to stem cell research.

GEI’s engineering efforts include mechanical (new air-handling units and exhaust fans, ductwork, etc.), electrical, laboratory plumbing, controls, fire protection and fire alarm. Project challenges include the requirement to keep all adjacent working labs functional during construction, requiring care planning and phasing of the construction effort.
